To all the teachers who laughed along when someone pointed at a black person on a video and shouted “look it’s you” - I check you. To all the group chat convos bantering a friend because they “shagged a black person” - I check you. Small town racism was my experience.
If I ever was having a conversation back then about race, people would actually reassure me, “Noooo but you're not black,” insinuating that because I was mixed raced I was more like them, a good thing. A common rhetoric that non-black people are consciously, or subconsciously, happy they aren’t. To be honest, it is painful for me to speak about this as I felt so much shame that society, and the system, allowed me to be ashamed of my race. My race, which has been repressed, mistreated, neglected and murdered for generations. A system which has failed me and everyone else - I no longer blame myself.Our individual voices seem louder than I have ever experienced before and now is a time for change.
