There's a button in your fridge that can help keep your food fresh for longer, but some people in the UK don't know about it and even more don't know exactly how it works. This button is in all fridges, but many people don't notice it.The secret switch is the temperature button, usually found inside the fridge. It usually has numbers from zero to five on it which set the temperature of your fridge. But they don't always match the actual coldness in degrees Celsius.

Instead, they show the power of the fridge, with five being the coldest, reports the Daily Star. The Food Standards Agency says fridges should be set at 5C or lower. Any higher than 8C and bacteria can grow quickly on your food, making it go off faster.According to Which? the perfect temperature for your fridge is between 0C and 5C. To check the exact temperature inside your fridge, pop a thermometer in a glass of water and place it on the middle shelf.

Leave it overnight for the most accurate reading. Remember, even if your thermostat is spot on, the temperature can change depending on the shelf. The higher the shelf, the warmer it will be - so think about where you put certain items. You should place cured meats, leftovers, cream cakes or anything else that doesn't need cooking on the top shelves. Raw meat, poultry and seafood should be kept on the bottom shelves, while fruit and vegetables should be stored in separate drawers.
