But no programme has been as nauseating as Sky1’s 2004 dating show,where they would woo Miriam, a stunning Mexican model in the hope of winning her heart and £10,000. Back then, reality TV was a race to the bottom. The more outrageous the concept – depriving people of sleep, giving women with low self-esteem extreme plastic surgery – the more likely it was to make it to screen. Now, the concept ofsounds like an offensive joke, but in an era of the lad mags, TV execs couldn’t resist.
The only talking head with that different point of view is Jo Juson, then-production executive at Brighter Pictures – who made the series. She comes across as almost bored of the subject, frustrated that she’s having to revisit a project that, to her, is culturally redundant and irrelevant.
