The Minister for Infrastructure is to be summoned to a council chamber to explain his refusal to consider an opening bridge design in Newry .

Newry SDLP rep, Killian Feehan said: "Newry's maritime past and the history of the canal is part of the town's DNA. "It is going to become a source of regret and I hope that the position from this council from all parties and none, would be to reject the recommendation contained in the correspondence from the minister."A brief adjournment was taken to clarify chamber protocol, after an attempt was made by CEO Marie Ward to refuse to allow DUP cllr Henry Reilly to speak on the matter, but he was then able to do.

"On this issue, I have to support the minister's decision, I'm sure it was not easy, because there is the desire to have the lifting bridge to let tall vessels in, that is maybe one in every 20 years and I just can't see how you would justify that given the real demands that we face on people's health and business."
