Public urged to 'recycle their tech' as rare, valuable materials in millions of old devices languish in UK homes.

Gallium: Used in medical thermometers, LEDs, solar panels, telescopes and has possible anti-cancer properties;Silver: Used in mirrors, reactive lenses that darken in sunlight, antibacterial clothing and gloves for use with touch-screens;

Many people who hoard old tech are concerned about protecting their personal data, but a"factory reset" should protect that - and council tips and responsible retailers keep electronics secure before they recycled. Much of the responsibility for that will lie with tech manufacturers, according to Prof Lenny Koh, director of the Centre for Energy, Environment and Sustainability at the University of Sheffield.

Natural sources of six of the elements found in mobile phones are set to run out within the next 100 years. These elements are also used in everything from fire-sprinkler systems to surgical implants. We need to preserve our PreciousElements 👉♻️

I use old phones as security cameras using:

Yes. Draws work.

Or manufacturers could offer to pay me a fraction of the extortionate price they charged me for them in the first instance... (don't panic, I'll recycle them!)

local authorities don't make it easy. I need a car, time to drive 30 minutes to the nearest point (I live near the border, neighbouring LA has numberplate recognition to keep us out) I'll keep stockpiling until the system is set up to help recycling rather than tick boxes

And WHO, may I ask, has been rummaging through my drawers? How very dare you! I'm outraged! 😡 It's not my fault I've got millions of old gadgets! 😂😂😂

Stockpiled? You don’t stockpile old electronic gadgets - it just gets put into the ‘useless old stuff’ drawer and forgotten about

Keep holding on to these very hard to recycle, hard to take apart devices. You are just being warned that it is not a yet thing, so don't throw them away. More specific news later.

Better have your recycling licences in order, though, mate.

What a story! “You have old stuff in your drawers”

I’m guilty of that - my house is a treasure trove of old tech.

The curse of modern technology, & the ‘disposable’ lifestyle that so many have come to embrace! Recycling is a must!!!

I use my old smartphone (no SIM) to do lots of things. My new phone will last at least a year longer because of it. I'm using it now, in fact.
