Microsoft has now addressed the trick , by limiting the amount of time your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription will gain from your existing subscriptions. Purchasing third-party Xbox Live Gold codes from other regions will still be a little cheaper than a full year of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but it's a lot more expensive than it was before.

Xbox Game Pass for Console conversion ratio: Any remaining time will convert to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate time at a ratio of 4:3 and be rounded up to the next full day. For example, 90 days remaining of Xbox Game Pass for Console will convert to 68 days of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate time. EA Play conversion ratio: Any remaining time will convert to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate time at a ratio of 3:1 and be rounded up to the next full day. For example, 90 days remaining of EA Play will convert to 30 days of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate time.

As you can see, you'll now need to purchase around 18 months of Xbox Live Gold to convert it to 12 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, pushing the price to around $120 instead of the previous $60 when using the conversion method., the annual subscription costs around $200 if you're paying monthly, so the conversion trick could still save you around $80 or so if that's what you'd prefer to do.
