The Met Police have released another statement in relation to the leak of diplomatic memos saying they have 'no intention of seeking to prevent editors from publishing stories in the public interest'. More on this breaking story here:

The Metropolitan Police have said they"respect the rights of the media" following a warning to journalists, seen as a direct attack on press freedom.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu had issued a warning to the media, suggesting they could face prosecution if they publish any more leaked government memos. But this afternoon, he issued a fresh statement, saying he has"no intention of seeking to prevent editors from publishing stories in the public interest in a liberal democracy".

However, he also went on to say the publication of specific documents - those leaked memos containing comments from the British ambassador to the US - could constitute a criminal offence"and one that carries no public interest defence".
