Extinction Rebellion: Met Police asks for 200 extra officers

The Metropolitan Police has requested about 200 extra officers from neighbouring forces to help deal with the Extinction Rebellion protests in central London.

Since Monday, climate change demonstrators have occupied Oxford Circus, Waterloo Bridge and Parliament Square.Dozens of people are in Oxford Circus, despite being told by police to move.A statement added:"One thing that is unusual about this demonstration is the willingness of those participating to be arrested and also their lack of resistance to the arrests.

Essex Police confirmed it had sent officers"to support the Metropolitan Police under national mutual aid protocols". A spokesman for the National Police Chief's Council said"forces routinely share officers through mutual aid" in order to deal with large-scale events. He added:"It is used to ensure an appropriate police presence exists where there is increased demand for it.Image captionOn Good Friday, police removed a pink boat that had been parked in the middle of Oxford Circus since Monday.

LBC bbc5live big shout out to ExtinctionRebellion for rubbing some of the indoctrination off the Great Brainwashed, making them think about their future and their children's future and the world that they live on. 12 Years to Do or Die - Time is Running Out

Bit late. If they had done their job in the first place they wouldn't need any more. still a nice little earner for overtime. Unfortunately the Mayor is on the side of the protesters.

Fines and Criminal records - make sure their lifes are as screwed up as they plan to mess with othe peoples lifes

BBCPolitics Whats point nanny state.

double and treble time-back to the future

The likelihood of a Permian, 96% extinction re-run makes parochial politics foolish in the extreme. Maybe you should focus on explaining how serious the situation is!

Doesn't the London police have water cannons That would quickly clear out this mob and given them a good wash at the same time.

Typical, all those resources to stop a peaceful protest, I wonder how many people were stabbed whilst all the metropolitan were deployed there, Capitalism rearting its ugly head.

Gonna need more than that 🤣🤣🤣

Didn't need any extra when thousands of Veterans marched for SoldierF peacefully and without incident though. But that won't get covered by a biased corrupt news station. IAmSoldierF mediablackout

I agree with Beth, the police wnt 2 call in the fire brigade and use water cannons 2 disperse them. Also the ones been arrested shud b hit with the full force of the law, and get the same sentence as ppl tryin 2 prevent the course of justice btween 2-5 yrs

A few loonies make a nuisance of themselves in London, national news. Thousands of Ex-servicemen take to the streets in Manchester to protest the disgraceful hounding of old soldiers... ... not a peep from the BBC... Pathetic.

Starting to become enemies to the people, enablers of the state(well ultimately it's always been that). Can't get one out for a stabbing tho, or a burglary. Working class ppl! Do you feel safe? Do you feel scared to voice opinion and protest peacefully? If yes, something is wrong

The Met fascist asks for 200 more to help them meet the demands of the dictator regime we live under.

Give it a couple of weeks and it will all blow over nothing will have changed but money and time will have been wasted and the protestors will pat themselves on the back for causing chaos and wasting taxpayers money safe in the knowledge that they won't actually get punished.

Open another box. Oh no there aren't any left.... That will teach them to cry wolf

This rebellion thing might be going just a bit toooooooooooo far. Peacefully is better.

I found one of their stickers on a lampost today. It's made of plastic. 🤡🤡

No sympathy at all for the police.Lost all respect for them.they allowed these hordes to congregate and watched as criminal activity, amd vandalism happened.if they had intervened early, plenty of them would be able to take those cancelled rest days.they made their own problems.

Take their benefits away.

disgusting. these people cause disruption and put a huge strain on already over stretched police and they think it’s all good? disgusting.

God help us if we ever get real civil unrest in London if the Met can't deal with a bunch of champagne socialist snowflake uni students blocking a road. Fuck me...

Send in the army with water cannon.

BBCPolitics 5 snipers with rubber bullets 200 police

I find your coverage of the protests in London, extremely bad, the protests in France are important, I am very happy that the bumblebees survived in Notre dam. Please try and cover important issues. ExtinctionRebellion .

And while they're putting all this extra strain on our already overstretched and underfunded police force, I wonder how many people's lives are being ruined because there aren't any policemen free to help them?

And while all this was going on thousands of military veterans and supporters marched through London, stopped at Buckingham palace, Parliment and the cenotaph without any trouble so it didn't make the news.

Where do they all come from

Stay strong protestors. Only way.

👆🏽“715 people have been arrested and 28 have been charged” this would suggest that 96% have been WRONGFULLY ARRESTED! THAT is what should be the news story! ExtinctionRebellion

When I've seen protesters speak they say they want thrr government to come out and hear there demands. Never mind the fact the government's on holiday, they need to ask themselves how is it going for the French protests in their 23rd week.

If the Police are looking for volunteers, I'll give them a hand if they'll Fly me down to London, As for talks, let the protesters got to China Russia or USA and protest there, see if they'll stop pumping thousand of Tons of Pollution into the Air, NO, its easier to BULLY decency

Who actually organised these demonstrations? Who is behind them? Or is this the first sign of a return to the 'Rent-a-Mob' mentality of yesteryear?

Or the current lot stop pricking about dancing, watching and skateboarding, and actually man up and do their job. Tough choice I know Folks.

It's a peaceful protest, you dont need any more officers. What really needs to happen is for the PM to turn up, have talks and make changes to prevent a very real threat.

Army they don't get paid overtime

While they ignore the Veterans

You don't need to ask for backup. Ask politicians to make laws that stop us from destroying the planet.

I love these anti government protesters .. they don’t care, they just want to cause trouble and disrupt the working day of normal people. They’ll claim their benefits from the government and country they hate .. climate today, blue socks tomorrow.. any excuse

Take several months to recruit & train 200 new officers…

So they can sit around and do fuck all except maybe have a go on a skateboard?

The money those arsehole protesters are costing the taxpayer.

700 + fines should just about cover the cost!

They have specified that all officers must be proficient at dancing like a prat. Desirable characteristics include a lack of understanding of the law and a previous caution for drug offences. As part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion white male officers need not apply.

Billy no mates takes a breather 😊

Extinction Rebellion protest: Police finally get organised as pink boat sails for eco warriorsPolice officers removed a pink boat left in Oxford Circus by climate change protesters on Friday after admitting they had finally “come up with a strategy”, five days after parts of London were left paralysed. They got tired of waiting for the tide to come in? shameshameshame Instead of ruining the livelihoods of small business owners and trying to inconvenience millions, they should get PhDs and go into R&D. Of course, that’s not as easy as being obnoxious and living in a fantasy world where pixie dust provides all the energy we need. Ironclad1215 Lamentable! Took them 4 days to think about clearing the area ffs. You can just imagine these police leaders sucking on their pencils and ‘mulling over’ what they could possibly do when confronted with a pink boat. It would be laughable if it wasn’t so pathetic.
