Pupils from all sections of society deserve to have an equal chance of success, says journalist and author Michael Segalov

On exam results days, there’s now something of a social media tradition of those long out of the school system sharing stories of success despite a disappointing set of results. In some cases it’s an honest attempt to reassure those who’ve not hit the high grades that their future is one still full of potential; for Jeremy Clarkson it’s just an annual excuse to show off.

OwenJones84 I'm an employer and I won't look at anyone who doesn't have at least C in Maths and English. Learnt from experience. The headline misses the point. Meritocracy works - success based on achievement. The article is better: why are so many given less of a chance to achieve?

OwenJones84 Meritocracy is not myth... However I agree.

OwenJones84 Congrats to all parents of students the stress is nearly over. No matter what the result you should be proud. They did their best

This Socialist drive for equality just drops with envy. If you can't make your way in life in your own merits then blame injustice and demand the bar be lowered for you.

OwenJones84 Imagine this practically. I failed my GCSEs but want to do medicine. I go to a free university, I don’t know how you will pay the salaries of the professors though? Because of this, they will fail medicine course as it is really hard. They have then wasted their life because of u

OwenJones84 One need only look at our government for proof that Britain isn't meritocratic.

OwenJones84 So what is the point of doin them then?

Yeah don't. I'm long term unemployed, and my jobcoach has a degree, but he's thick as fuck.

Mediocrity Is Great 👍.!! IS THIS THE NEW NORMAL.!!

Agree to a point. Merit gets erased by nepotism - such as Jewish overrepresentation in US elite universities despite small population. The wealthy also buy their way in. Then you have ethnic ppl who get let in despite their inability to do content & the continually lowered bar.

getting a D or E isn`t success it`s failure !! left wing bullshit doesn`t make it otherwise!

The education system hasn't failed them. The government has. The gap is widening because of austerity.

'Meritocracy' means labelling whole groups of people as lacking in, or without 'merit'. Everyone is of merit.

lmao
