Little Simz, the 25-year-old, North London musician for whom mainstream industry acclaim is long overdue, and whose album Grey Area floored with trenchant lyrics on knife crime and suicide, had been a critic’s favourite. With Sampha, Skepta and male-heavy rock band Wolf Alice among the most recent winners, it was time, too, the Mercury Prize awarded a female solo artist. And, with a starring role in the new Netflix reboot of East London gangland drama Top Boy, this was undoubtedly Simz’s year.
