Mentally-ill son stabbed dad 75 times during 'brutal attack'

A 58-year-old Nottingham father was stabbed 75 times in under three minutes by his own mentally-ill son in what a jury was told was “an intense, sustained and brutal attack”. Brenton Marriott suffered fatal wounds inflicted by Rudi Marriott who claims he wrestled the blade from his father and was acting in self-defence when he used the weapon on him.

"There was a stab wound to the back of his right shoulder and the knife used to inflict that stab wound travelled through the right shoulder, through the muscle of his neck and cut through the artery that takes oxygenated blood. The prosecutor said members of the family had encouraged Rudi Marriott to seek help for his mental health difficulties but he "did not respond to their encouragement as he did not believe there was anything wrong with him". He said the defendant was also a frequent smoker of cannabis which the prosecutor said "was not a help dealing with his mental health difficulties".

Mr Sandhu said: "Two builders, working on another property in the same street, saw Brenton Marriott after he collapsed, ran and tried to assist him and as they did so he said this: 'He stabbed me, he stabbed me'. The emergency services arrived and he was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre but at 12.05pm, an hour after he had been stabbed repeatedly, Brenton Mariott was pronounced deceased.
