Two men have refused to stand in court after being charged with rioting on the night Lyra McKee was killed
Two men accused of leading the riots in Londonderry on the night Lyra McKee was murdered have refused to stand in court. Paul McIntyre, 51, and Christopher Gillen, 38, have been charged with riot, petrol bomb offences and the arson and hijacking of vehicles.Police said they were concerned the suspects might attempt to intimidate witnesses or leave the country if they were granted bail.
McIntyre and Gillen are connected to the dissident paramilitary group the New IRA, prosecutors claim.Christopher Gillen, 38, also refused to stand in court. Both men were refused bail The group, which opposes Northern Ireland’s peace process, claimed responsibility for the murder of Lyra, 29, who died from gunshot wounds as she was reporting on clashes between police and New IRA dissidents on the Creggan estate in Derry on April 18.Two teenage boys, aged 15 and 18, had also been arrested in connection with the investigation but have been released without charge.
