Oscar Abolafia was born on New York's Upper West Side to a family of Spanish/Jewish descent. His father, a florist, was perhaps the person who instilled in him a value for the aesthetic at an early age. Between the ages of seventeen and nineteen, Abolafia would travel to Harlem, staying up all night to capture photographs, what he described as "quite an experience, I used to go all night, and I used to shoot different people.
