Partners in life and in work, Arnaud Vaillant, 30, and Sébastien Meyer, 31, launched their quintessentially Parisian-chic label Coperni in 2013, winning them the ANDAM First Collections Prize as well as landing them a coveted spot in the LVMH Prize finals. In 2015, the pair were appointed creative directors at the heritage maison of Courrèges, a position they held until 2017, which resulted in putting their own brand on pause.
“During this time we’ve realised how fragile the body is, so we made the SS21 collection protective and soft,” says Vaillant. Expect a relaxed silhouette, three-dimensional textiles in biomorphic shapes, and vibrant colours redolent of iPods from the early noughties. The technical jersey fabric that is used throughout for the tailoring is not only stretchy and comfortable, but also antibacterial, moisturising and offers UV protection.
What experiences did you take away from working at Courrèges and how did it influence the relaunch of Coperni?“We learned so much about how to make a full collection, produce a runway show while managing all the communication. We also had to work with the DNA [of Courrèges]. When we relaunched Coperni, we took little bits from our experience at Courrèges, but this time we wanted to do it in a more intelligent and pleasurable way.
