He is now able to live a relatively normal life and spend time with his 11 grandchildren

A grandad has shared how medical cannabis enables him to lead a normal life and cope with his severe arthritis and fibromyalgia. Peter Arquhard, of Nottingham, was a road construction and gardening landscaper for most of his life but was left unable to work due to his medical condition, which includes severe arthritis in both hands and arms.

However, thanks to medical cannabis Mr Arquhard can do more normal activities, like opening a door handle or picking up a cup of tea without being in excruciating pain. The 60-year-old uses the medication on a daily basis and has a prescription tailored to his specific needs from Alternaleaf , which is a private clinic.

He continued: "My arthritis means doing normal, everyday activities are extremely difficult and can cause a lot of pain. My hands are really cold all of the time, and I struggle to do things like holding a cup of tea, or turning a door handle. I can’t open cupboards and pick up a tin of beans, there is a really specific angle I have to turn my hands to, to just be able to do anything.

Many older people in the UK are now turning to medical cannabis to treat their chronic pain. A recent study by Alternaleaf found that 55 percent of those aged 55 or older felt it should be more widely available, and three in five said they would feel comfortable taking it if it were prescribed to them by a doctor.
