Messages of condolence left by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Prime Minister Theresa May
"As a journalist she pursued truth wherever it took her, never content with the sullen silence of unanswered questions."
bbclaurak This will last no longer than the service did!
There has to be enough decent people to make these to pay on Thursday
Why does the DUP leader not applause the priest is she pro terror
Terrorism has no religious or nationalistic boundaries.Terrorists are people forcing there views on others through violence, I don't care if you call yourselves, IRA , ISIS, TAMIL,KLUKLUX CLAN,WHITE SUPREMIST, BLACK SUPREMIST,you are all just terrorist who are cowards with guns.
They’re a disgrace! Pictures say it all! Sickening the lot of them!
I love the fact that they are forced to clap & stand (albeit awkwardly) at their own political incompetence. Joyous! They are surrounded by people who have had enough. NI deserves better. wedeservebetter
BBCPolitics Who?
Agreed. Why, indeed. But there's always a moral, always a story, always a series of threads that binds and cuts through the mesh of society before we get to see an effect, which in itself is actually a cause, and therefore another pearl in and amongst those threads, such as Lyra.
If they are unable to resume their duties & this seems to be the stance take the process away from them, they are not attending work where else would this happen - only politicians can keep this up - shut them down & give the people leadership - oh forgot where’s that coming from
It is so unfortunate that it takes death & tragedy to unite us, the shame is this too is ephemeral & sooner rather than later we revert to our ego fed & driven myopic point of view
DFriesenGlobal they all agree they all clap, then they leave and live the same hateful lives.
DUPleader has lead in her knickers obviously. In addition She should also wipe that disgusting expression of her face as she grudgingly rose
BBCPolitics The DUP leading the way back to the past. No change there.
DUPleader really didn’t want to get up here Squirming
BBCWorld Talk about hypocrites.
BBCPolitics United in knowing that if they didn’t stand they’d get battered on social media.
BBCWorld Nauseous
Blah Blah Blah, cheap shot from the priest. Tell us Mr. Magill, should we accept murdering unborn babies in your country What about gay marriage? Can we look forward to the catholic church approving that too? Easy to get seals clapping soundbites with no solutions.
Foster is completely oblivious to the mood and sentiment. It would be good to hear her thoughts on why it took so long for her to 'applaud' (or at least give a sorry excuse for a clapping motion).
Just at the very end watch Martina Anderson staring out ARLENE FOSTER NO LOVE LOST HERE
KirstyBashforth What was interesting was that most of the politicians there sat stern face when the priest said those words not moving or reacting and none of them stood up until they realised all behind had. Mrs May was only one nodding in agreement from the start. They all let us down. Gutless
BBCPolitics Why is it - In gods name ?
bbclaurak Arlene Foster one of the last to stand, and really did not applaud along with the rest of the congregation did she'
bbclaurak Sadly I think it will be water off a duck's back to two immovable objects. I would like to be proved wrong.
BBCPolitics The Priests words were right, the editing of this tweet implied quilt, very wrong.
bbclaurak true becauce the irish want one ireland
BBCPolitics Cos establishment dont care bout own people thats why.
To be fair to Arlene, of whom I am no fan, to say the least, she seemed reluctant to stand or clap, perhaps because she realised that she is one of those to whom the priest is directly referring. Also, Mary Lou seems to say 'up we get' or similar, but I'm no lip reader.
Where was the Catholic Church and other church leaders when the US and its allies carpet bomb Iraq, Syria, Gaza? Let he who is without sin throw the first stone.
bbclaurak Arlene foster looks slightly annoyed there. Talk about a slow hand clap.
caitrionambalfe Thank you for sharing, I did not this in our news in Australia. Made me cry 😢
Why do we tolerate and might I add (pay) someone like Arlene Foster to reside in an official capacity when she clapped like a seal and looked like she had just swallowed something bitter 🤢
RIPLyra For some reason, this extraordinary moment reminds me of the final lines in Ted Hughes’ final work (about the sacrifice of another young woman), a re-working of Euripides’ ‘Alcestis’:
Alene glued to her seat. She typified hardcore Loyalists there in her reluctance to move. She hated being in a Catholic Church, being preached at by a Catholic Priest, in remembrance of a Lesbian. Nothing has changed.
Look at that arlenefoster , what a bigot, could hardly be bothered to clap
RIPLyra For some reason, this extraordinary moment reminds me of the final lines in Ted Hughes final work (about the sacrifice of another young woman), a re-working of Euripides’ ‘Alcestis’:
I think bomber Anderson looked the most uncomfortable,as if it doesn't want to be there in the first place.
Maybe ask god? It’s the belief in him and other gods that’s caused this. Bit hypocritical of a religious person to ask this when it’s the very religion that instigated these atrocities. God is either evil to allow this; impotent in preventing it or more likely imaginary.
juanincognito A standing ovation at Lyra McKee's funeral, when a priest asks mourners why it took her death to unite politicians, the politicians realise the cameras are pointing at them & think 'photo opportunity!' lyramckeefuneral
Arlene fosters face says it all , I wish I was anywhere else but here , peace in Ireland , never . In name only , sad but true .
bbclaurak 👏👏 unfortunately it hasn't, it was only for show
Why in God's name? Because Sinn Fein / IRA are terrorists
Problem goes beyond politics. Sadly even when politicians agree. There will be someone that wants blood, for some twisted cultural or religious reason.
bbclaurak Ah, but it didn't unite them. Just look at the politicians, particularly the DUP.
caitrionambalfe These saddest days. So very sorry.
I feel it's an insult that the politicians even attended. They should have been locked out and dressed in sackcloth and ashes.
Shame on that crowd. While some in the Cregan protect the killer, a scapegoat in Arlene Foster is rounded on.
Disingenuous leadership. Both part of the problem, neither willing to accept responsibility. Collectively self serving. Cmon, enough of this. The public deserves better. Time to reform and take control
alisonthewliss Arlene Foster is livid, think about that.
DUPleader arms crossed, scowling, not applauding. Speaks volumes.
DUP leader not interested
See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love. And I for winking at your discords too Have lost a brace of kinsmen: all are punish'd.
DUPleader couldn’t be more reluctant to stand up or even clap!! Why bother!!
The people stood first & then reluctantly the politicians! Disgraceful. Grow the f**k up BOTH 'political' sides & realise your home is this island of Eire & NI so learn to work & live TOGETHER for the better good!! Sad but true what the preacher said...
Will the terrorist killer ever be brought to proper justice though.... unfortunately I think not
Notice that Arlene Foster’s applause was little more than a token gesture. Not much hope there.
willhanafin Not a decent one among them
Terrorism is Terrorism no matter what coat it wears and this poor girl has lost her life because of it. So very wrong and so very sad, RIP.
Because human beings are bloody idiots😢
One very uncomfortable, reluctant DUP Leader.
bbclaurak Well said Sir! Shameful. Looking at Arlene Fosters reaction gives me chills
BBCWorld This is where all are together....let him preach to all about a life wasted due to those whose violent acts continue to show the ignorance of thinking acts of violence makes a difference......what a frustrating world we live in.
any standing ovation should surely have been for the deceased, not the priest. perhaps it was, but the gesture of recognition & solidarity was utterly lost on those reporting it.
bbclaurak Why did you present this like a phone video?
bbclaurak I suggest a level of hypocrisy within this outburst by the Priest?
bbclaurak Foster looks more annoyed than ashamed.
bbclaurak '...why it took her death to unite politicians' - even a priest can't be that unworldly! They've turned up for a halo polishing photo op, no more, no less. Tomorrow, business as usual; unless it's a good tool for battering an opponent [see 'Saint Jo Cox']
bbclaurak SkyNews called this a challenge to May and Varadkar. I think they dont have a clue.
bbclaurak Politicians are only interested in exploiting whatever to promote their own causes. Politicians do not unite. They divide as often as they can, and will do anything to keep themselves in power. There is a rude awakening on the way for many of them.
bbclaurak Arlene didn’t want to stand though did she. Actions mean everything Arlene.
bbclaurak Pity the leaders did not stand immediately they looked around to see everyonevlooking at them before deciding to stand & clap or not as The DUP leader seemed to be oblivious to the moment which kind of sums up their stance. Nothing will change!!!!
bbclaurak Arlene took her time there...
Bit rich from a church that gave and still gives absolution to terrorists.
caitrionambalfe Terrible tragedy. Stop the madness already!
Poignant words. If anyone will learn from them, is another question.
bbclaurak Hopefully something positive can come from such a tragic event.
bbclaurak Its no good bringing God into this, might as well invoke the Tooth Fairy.
bbclaurak come on arlene !
bbclaurak Arlene dragged reluctantly to her feet - 'Shit I can't sit this out!' - and contrives a flap rather than a clap.
bbclaurak .DUPleader looking very uncomfortable
vicderbyshire A priest ... Therein lies the Irish problem.....
caitrionambalfe This tragedy isn’t it the bad side of the brexit effect ? To separate people from actually the same ethnical origine wanting re-establishling an unrealistic frontier ? As a convinced european, I don’t want admit that such a tragedy might nowadays happen !
Give you love.
You want the « why », you,’ve got the « how ».
Two very scary women 🤔
The man is wright in what he is saying it's the same the globe over it takes the death of someone before politicians to act and get things done
BBCWorld These priests have sheltered murderers over the troubles
caitrionambalfe It DOES appear that both parties have women for leaders though; so maaaaybe, its NOT just MEN who can be intractable and obdurate
Dup leader looks a bit defensive.
caitrionambalfe 👏👏👏👏🙏
caitrionambalfe Sad they will be united for just a couple of hours and not for good. Heartbroken for Lyra 💔
caitrionambalfe Hopefully, a thought provoking question!!🙁
I wouldn't want to sit around a table & try to reason with Arlene Foster. But I suppose in truth they're as bad as each other.
Beyond100Days DUP Arlene Foster looks like she’s chewing wasps & 🍋 . A ceremony for a gay catholic woman in a Protestant cathedral. newsnight KattyKayBBC
Note the DUP b**** isnt clapping. Says a lot
DUP women so unmoved.
That was a real struggle for Arlene Foster to recognise the priest's assertion.
🙏
BBCWorld It’s a terrible killing but it’s starting to look like they are using her murder for more sinister Reasons, was she targeted because she is simply gay? It feels like politicians especially the Marxists are using this awful killing to further the cultural Marxist agenda
Well said Sir.
Interesting to note how reluctant Foster was to get up. Couldn’t quite bring herself to clap the sentiment.
BBCWorld it didn't. they knew, if they didn't clap, their political enemies would use it against them.
NOBODY even god himself can answer this question ‼️ And most of all ...the politicians ‼️
Just because they are photo oped under a church roof doesnt mean they are united. Imagine the scandal if they didnt turn up.........or clap
I spy one particularly sour faced piece of human trash who can't even bring herself to applaud.
Preaching from the pulpit is cheap and unconvincing. As a member of a large community-based organisation, he needs to ask what he and his fellow cheap preachers could have done to stop this and other murders. Or whether they actually made things worse rather than better.
An absolute tragedy for such a young life to end. Yet I don't remember seeing all these politicians at police, soldiers & prison officers funerals, but then some of those standing there were responsible. Maybe now they'll stop spreading hate.
After you die the same people who caused your death gives you a standing ovation. The hypocrisy of politicians can not stop even in the house of God. It looks like mafia is in everywhere nowadays.
763 deaths of soldiers over 30 years on Operation Banner did any PM ever attend there funerals
Rather odd in my experience to applaud at a funeral but sometimes people are greatly moved I guess.
They are united for the moment but will go back to their old ways soon enough
A hero of our time. You have balls, Father.
Its so sad, a young lady with her life in front of her, to prove a point....sick
Better ? Why, in God’s name, are “Protestants” sitting in front of a catholic priest at a sodomite’s funeral? 🧐
Noticeable that Nancy Pelosi made no comment or apology for stirring up the troubles along with the EU.
That is one of the most amazing and emotional things I have seen.
MoveablePress Why indeed...
THE BEATLES are more popular than Jesus.
Great point...but we have insufferable bas*ards in charge!

Lyra McKee: Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn attend funeral in Belfast - follow liveTheresa May and Jeremy Corbyn have travelled to Belfast to attend the funeral of murdered journalist Lyra McKee, as the pair missed today's Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs). Hopefully the SoSNI will realise what happens in N Ireland when people don’t bother to do their jobs. Here is not like anywhere else, inaction costs lives. Peace here is very fragile. Curious and not objecting but does this mean we will see high level attendance at future IRA victim's funerals? Always nice to use a death to boost PR...
