'Mayhem' fears and outrage as major road to be closed for months

The closure of the main roads in Kimberley for roadworks will cause "mayhem", say locals, after the announcement that they will be shut for more than two months. Works to replace gas mains mean that Main Street and surrounding areas will be impassable by drivers starting on Monday, July 29.

Kimberley Town Council announced the news by posting a roadworks bulletin from Via, Nottinghamshire County Council's roads department, on its Facebook page. The authority limited comments on it - but outrage was obvious from the large number of angry reactions and shares that the post received. Sharing it externally, one local, Ethan Crowe, wrote: "It's going to be mayhem." And Ellis Tansley, sharing it in the Spotted: Kimberley Facebook group, wrote: "Well won't this be fun."

Glenn Stockton commented on that post to say: "Wow, why not just close Kimberley down completely. Never anywhere else in this country has there been so many road closures and temporary traffic lights." And Deborah Pearce commented on another shared post, saying: "Oh God not again."There will also be two-way temporary traffic lights at Main Street's junction with Green Lane for a week between Monday, September 9 until Monday, September 16.

While Cadent completes its job on the gas mains, Severn Trent Water and National Grid will also undertake necessary work during the same period. A diversion route, from Eastwood Road to the B6010 Nottingham Road, onto the A610 Kimberley/Eastwood bypass and then the B600 Nottingham Road, or vice versa, has been suggested as an alternative to drivers.
