Coronavirus: Masks for public 'could put NHS supplies at risk'

The WHO guidance, issued earlier this month, warned that the use of masks by the public can create a"false sense of security" and lead to people ignoring other protective measures, such as hand hygiene and physical distancing.

"There is currently no evidence that wearing a mask by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses."But a group of medics has called on people to make their own face masks to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Why not use a home made mask. Why so difficult to understand for the scientific advisors

Public makes their own or purchases non-n95 mask .

It’s not fair to say they shouldn’t be used when what they actually mean is they do help but we don’t want you to buy them...even though they don’t buy them from the same places as the public...

This is peer pressure, nasty way of doing things when it's your screw up.

I assume like everything this government will consider the ramifications of its actions and look at and take in other views and opinions.

Whatever WHO said, I just believe in figures. Hong Kong is a city with much higher population density than in London and until today only 1029 confirmed cases and 4 people sadly died, and this city is just next right to China! Masks dont work? Really? DIY mask with filter works!

Why are companies being allowed to sell to the public ? They should be made to handover all stock they have to the NHS

Wearing masks will help. But I agree we should leave the surgical ones to NHS. If your search 'HK mask' this is a mask designed by a respectable Chemistry professor in Hong Kong with removable filter which can be 2 sheets of kitchen towels, free sewing pattern templates.

Someone sat on the bus this am with a mask on. It wasn’t covering her nose just her mouth!? OK!

The Chinese have been wearing them for years, didn't do much good did it !

I thought it was the NHS staff’s fault?

Use scarfs bandanas etc and glory with tight weave. Leave the proper stuff for professional. We can be like cowboy in films it s more sensible idea if they want to cover the nose and mouth

One advantage of wearing a mask is that you don’t unconsciously touch your face as much. That will reduce the odds of catching it from a contaminated surface. Also I gather it’s not so much free floating viruses, as tiny water droplets which get you

Duh, really.

We had this whole debate in 2009 with Swine Flu another Covid virus where we had 110000 cases in UK. The government in the end decided against public face masks. This is not Korea where people are tidy have you seen the streets already dirty English dropping them everywhere.

Tory government excuses. The truth we don't make anything anymore. Nearly all English industries are all Foreign owned.

Masks have been mandatory to wear everywhere since 19th March in Czechia. They were not available to buy either, many people made their own and volunteered to sew and supply nationwide or are just protecting themselves with a scarf. Masks4All COVIDー19

Why are you giving these people the time of day. They left the country while this pandemic was going on. Now they are blaming the government because they can't get back. They new the risk. Leave them there. The uk has enough problems with cv19. We don't need any more. Lock down

ffs, NHS PPE shortage is government inefficiency not public demand.

Incorrect.... SadiqKhan like many people did NOT call for use of masks in London. He called for use of non-medical 'home-spun' face covers. These do not in any way threaten availability of medical masks which should be reserved for health professionals

All those wearing a mask in daily life for 'protection' should switch to a sprig of lucky heather. It offers the same protection and is not stealing PPE from the NHS, who actually need it.

NOT if you buy ones you can wash when you get home that’s what I’ve been doing for weeks now when I go out to the shops

Well I'm not going out without one if that means I have to stay in for a YEAR. NO MASK NO WAY

Could ?

Concern about mask supplies for NHS should not be the reason! Public not wearing masks will increase no. of patients which will soon become burden on NHS. NHS supplies is critical. Why UK government does not provide public guidance about making masks at home instead?

So everyone just buy their own ? 🤷🏻‍♂️ gotta be a few factories in the uk not doing out. liamgallagher PrettyGreenltd start knocking some up

There is not just one supplier of masks on this world !

In The Times today- “Government scientists will examine the evidence about masks today before making a formal recommendation on whether the public should wear them”. Assuming the obvious, can they indicate why they are being worn in hospitals? This is disingenuous.

There are many many videos around showing how to make your own mask - why does the BBC not show these instead of the usual scare mongering headlines

And we all know that’s why they’ve been saying we don’t need to wear them.

So nothing to do with the science

Everyones suddenly become a scientist on here

Well the government should have got its act together.Perhaps if Boris hadn’t been to busy with his latest squeeze he might have seen this coming.

A little reminder: smoking and vaping are dangerous too, not only for the obvious reason, smoke is filtered by lungs and the virus can use it as vehicle. Please if you need smoking or vaping do it alone

PPE to NHS etc is via industry. PPE available to public is via retail shops. If supply chain is prioritised to key orders retail will be in short supply, so will not restrict key supplies. Footage of public use of PPE shows clinical masks, you cannot buy that in retail outlets

Home made masks is what should be encouraged. This is a practical solution and few countries have started issuing public requests for these to avoid any such short supplied.

BBC needs to stop lying - masks work. If the problem is supply - masks still work. Supply can be solved with homemade masks. Lying about this medical issues is a reason the BBC should be defunded

BBCLookEast Most masks the public would have access to will be pretty useless & certainly not suitable for health care professionals. But the production of them would take up valuable manufacturing resources.

Pretty obvious, the world had a PPE problem as soon as Covid19 started in China. Countries need to start producing their own going towards

Companies like Veenak International in Birmingham are exporting PPE to the EU, because the government is ignoring their offers to supply the NHS. Why don’t you take up this story?

British public has started to give up on the Gov't medical advice and is taking its own eyes. My husband works in a supermarket, the majority of shoppers now wear mouth and nose coverings

Meanwhile in other news, I seem to have lost one of my socks 🧦! FakeNews

And if you don't wear it out could put you at risk. Look on the Web for instructions and make your own. But please do wear them in public areas. They do work just look at Eastern countries that has stemmed the infection growth.

So you've been reporting for quite a while now on NHS PPE shortages, now it's everyone should wear a mask. This will deplete stocks available for our critical workers in the NHS.

Says, just about everyone.. Unless we get shoddy masks in which case what would be the point.

Hubbie bought couple of boxes from Amazon last year when he started restoring some furniture with lots sanding and spraying. But if we didnt already have these, I would make them. I think ease down may include use of masks

BBCLookEast General public should use washable reusable masks keep the disposable ones for those that use them properly!

People can make their own and wash it

The NHS and key workers must have priority but this is bloody 🩸 obvious. 😷 NOT so much for your self but to reduce risk to your fellow humans This could help save JOBS and the ECONOMY

Another could?

the tory gov are giving them away

It's not Rocket science. Have a small sealed room they must be one in an Hospital put up shelves and fit out ultra violet lights. Put used PPE on the shelf's and close the door. Switch on the Ultra Violet lights for say an hour or two, & collect them afterwards for reuse.

What about your reporters wasting them? Do they need to be in an ICU ward?

Well that is so obvious. Why do you think the government have been discouraging this ?

Trouble is the public don’t use them properly anyway.

Hopson doesn't understand this issue. Masks for the public are to stop egress of large droplets and can be cloth. Some evidence cloth is better than fluid repellent surgical masks designed to prevent ingress/splashes.

That’s why the endless lies saying that they don’t work.

Evidence strongly suggests masks stop the virus spreading so everyone should be wearing them. Not many N95 available for public and over priced so dont see any harm in public using disposable ones.

The government have created this disaster

This ongoing denial of the effectiveness of masks has to stop. There IS science that covering your face can provide at least some protection for you as well as others. It's only common sense after all. Time for an about face on this issue coronavirusuk

'Could'.... Most people who are not NHS staff get their masks from eBay and Amazon or a local pharmacy. The supplies for NHS come from elsewhere.

Guys, make your own mask!

we do not need masks

Dont use surgical mask, use fabric mask!

Masks, if endorsed for general public wear could be reusable, manufactured quickly, even at home, and are unlikely to require testing and approval. Masks for NHS settings are different. They should not compete for supply.

That’s it- blame the public and say that they’re “buying up all the masks”. Never mind that the government are responsible for stocking the PPE that the NHS need. It’s the government’s fuck up; not joe public’s.

Look at Hong Kong, everybody wears a mask voluntarily, and they had zero new confirmed case yesterday for the first time after months. These so-called government advisers are killing people

We have made our own. It's easy.

Masks were key in defeating Spanish flu at the end of WW1. A century later, let's agree to use them again to see off this terrible virus Masks4All

Once everyone is wearing, transmission rates will fall & pressure on hospitals & deaths will reduce. Herd immunity is nonsense. We need to eradicate this virus, reducing re-infection rate using all measures in combination, including MASKS. UK is falling behind on this. Masks4All

I bought masks as soon as it looked bad in China, was obvious what was going to happen.

N95s & similar NOT required & must be saved for medical staff. Homemade & improvised coverings are fine & are becoming widely available. Bandanas and scarves suffice if nothing else available & they cover mouth & nose. The main function is to protect others from the wearer.

Public mask-wearing is to stop unknowingly infected but contagious people spreading spit and mucus droplets directly onto the faces of others & onto surfaces that may be touched later in confined spaces like public transport, where distancing can't always be guaranteed.

Do the BBC get paid to do this 'intensive' research?

This is why the 'scientific advice' says is not necessary for us to have one in public.

That's on the government, not the public, other countries have been able to provide and it has worked. What are they going to do about it?

Make your own I did and the wife is furious

This is ridiculous: make your own from a bandana , scarf or t shirt : instructions available on YouTube

Well that's what the government want gives them an excuse for lack of supplies for the NHS

Quite the opposite. Look at Thailand, 90% pop wearing masks, has meant massively less hospital admissions from CoVid and therefore much less turnover of PPE required in hospitals. Masks work.

Excuse the silly photo but you can buy multi packs of these and they can be rewashed and used over again. Have one for each day!

There plenty of other means for general public to use/Make. I’ve refused them on my work site as I think NHS and carers need them more. NHS are low but notice all local shops selling over counter🤔

But would help the public, wouldn’t it

Means the public become under even more risk then ?

People are making their own masks or buying home made masks. Any proper masks are being donated to front line people. do they not pay attention to social media etc?

Use a bandana, a makeshift balaclava, a scarf! You don’t need surgical PPE

suddenly we actually have things made in America over here, a whole new cottage industry

Of course its the public's fault is it not?

Just cover your mouths, doesn’t have to be a medical mask. WHY IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND.
