After 55 years recording the sounds of nature, Martyn Stewart is making his archive public.

Capturing these sounds is harder than you might think.

Stewart estimates that two-thirds of the environments he has recorded over the last half-a-century have now vanished forever. "You can't protect anything you don't understand, so I thought the best way to educate people about that was sound," he says. "He made the natural world come to life in a way that nobody had ever done for me, and his curiosity was intoxicating.
