Unimpressed Martin O'Neill believes the current Rangers side are "desperately poor" and that the Ibrox side he competed against would batter them 6-0.

The legendary Celtic boss – who revealed he was a VIP guest of Dermot Desmond for last weekend's title decider at Parkhead – was left aghast by the quality on the show from Philippe Clement's side. The 72-year-old could not get onside with Graeme Souness' belief that Rangers aren't far off a Celtic team who have just secured a 12th title in 13 seasons, while not losing a game against their biggest rivals.

But O'Neill – who was at pain to make clear how much work Rangers have to do – made it clear he is not a believer in what is going at Ibrox. In an impassioned verdict, speaking on talkSPORT, O'Neill said: "I think there is a . I'm sorry to have to disagree with Graeme. Rangers were desperately poor, really, really poor the other day in a game which was very important for them.

"That's as poor a Rangers side I have seen in years, I have to tell you that, that's my view. The side back in the year 2000, Rangers and Celtic would have had more money than they have now, a bit more money to spend. But the side Rangers had in the year 2000, 01, 02, would have beaten this Rangers side about 6-0."

And the Irishman admits times have changed in Glasgow where big money signings have become a rarity rather than the norm amid the changing financial landscape across Europe. O'Neill added: "I think there is a difference. What is happening up there , in defence, if there is no money. If things were reversed and we came back to this Earth in 100 years and found out everybody wanted to invest in Scottish football rather than English football, you would see a different scenario.
