EXCLUSIVE: Manchester town hall chiefs have written to the Ministry of Justice about HMP Manchester

Manchester city council has contacted the Government to call for Strangeways prison to be closed and relocated out of Manchester, we can exclusively reveal today.

READ MORE: Row over plans for late night Metrolink tram trial that 'cuts across side of Manchester' Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, who also designed Manchester Town Hall, the Grade II-listed prison on Southall Street opened in June 1868 and is now more than 150 years old. The council argues Strangeways' location in the city centre is acting as a 'barrier to growth and development' and said it planned to unveil a masterplan for the area by next Spring.

Councillor Bev Craig, leader of Manchester City Council, said the council has, for some time, harboured a desire to move the prison, but its relocation was now being actively pursed with central Government. "At the moment its city centre location acts as a barrier to growth and development which could bring new jobs, much-needed houses and green space.

Rebuilt following the infamous prison riot of 1990, the biggest disturbance in prison service history, Strangeways is one of the country's largest, high-security prisons for men and has capacity for almost 700 inmates, although its actual population now is thought to be far less than that.

Good idea

They'll have a job, it looks pretty heavy to me...

So they want to demolish the “Fake Goods shops” and built luxury houses and flat, so of course you’ve got to get rid of strangeways prison, it’s an isore

PROBLEY AS THEM NEED THE SPACE FOR THE REBUILD OF SHOPS

Move it where exactly

There goes my Strangeways tour (which you refuse to publicise).

Funny i could think of a thousand ways to spend the cash, unless Burnham plans on using it for his bed for a night,

I know let’s close it down, selloff the city centre land (obviously) and dump it and it’s inmates in the countryside(aka someone else’s patch) absolute lunacy. Shame on you city council, shame on you! 😡

They could expand 'Forest Bank' and have the prison in the Irwell Valley!

Turn it into a Prison/Hotel, its been done and they look amazing and I imagine would attract a hell of a lot of paying customers to Manchester.

I've said it before and I shall say it again please don't take our legacy away 🙀 strangeways is the heart of manchester 😊

It’s good enough for the people in it

I think that's a bloody good idea. It is old and past its use. A horrible place.

The City Centre is becoming bigger and this would have been on the outskirts...Now its classed as prime land that's why Manchestercouncil wants the land

Good idea, great work.

And replace with unaffordable apartments. They'll be plenty of backhanders going around the corrupt MCC

Inevitable, the council is at the mercy of property moguls and after the London money. The prison will be knocked down for 'luxury apartments' Manchester is becoming far too pompous

They want to clear that whole area for whatever reason. They're getting rid of all the knock off shops now too. Very pricey land.

Is it still fish every Friday at the Strangeways hotel?

That's the only reason they've just started clamping down on all the knock off gear in cheetham Hill. It's surved it's purpose of small back handers now time for the big bucks with sky scrapers. bentasfuck

Makes sense, why is there a prison in the centre of a city?

Manchester council is in the pockets of developers. I feel massive corruption will ultimately come out of the woodwork

North Sea ?

This would make amazing city centre development for a live, leisure and work place and, make a positive change to that part of Manchester.

No doubt so they can build a multi storey version where they can flog similarly sized cells to first time buyers for £200k plus…..
