A granddad who nearly died after suffering two strokes has hit the jackpot and secured almost half a million pounds on the People's Postcode Lottery. Michael Stokes is still recovering from the blocked arteries and the two medical incidents, but he and his wife Sandra now have something to celebrate, after the couple won £461,538 in the August draw.
The kitchen and bathroom design firm owner temporarily lost his speech after the two strokes in October last year. He had to go to the hospital in Rhodes where he was diagnosed almost immediately. Both carotid arteries in his neck were "90 per cent blocked" he was told. The Stokes – who have five children and 10 grandchildren - shared the £1m jackpot with six neighbours after LE9 7PA was revealed as the winner of Postcode Lottery’s weekly Millionaire Street prize on Saturday. Each ticket picked up £76,923, but Michael and Sandra had six between them, while another neighbour doubled his prize with two tickets.
Sandra added: "I’m not that emotional, but this is incredible. It’s beyond my wildest dreams." Now she considering leaving her job as a midwife after taking semi-retirement a few years ago.
