A 64-year-old man was rescued after spending three days stranded on a desert island in the Bahamas.Cay Sal is an uninhabited island in the Cay Sal Bank, a large atoll consisting of 96 small islands about 30 miles off the coast of Cuba.
The islands are territory of the Bahamas, but the island nation struck a deal with the US Coast Guard to regularly fly over the atoll to look for stranded Cuban migrants. Coast Guard Sector Key West noticed the stranded sailor after an aircrew saw a man firing flares from a ‘disabled’ sailboat. After he was located, the Coast Guard flew a sentry aircraft over the island to drop food, fresh water, and a radio to establish communication.
‘The man notified the crew he’d been stranded for three days after his vessel became disabled during his voyage,’ the Coast Guard said in a news release.
