The smash happened on the M58 westbound, between the M6 Orrell Interchange near Wigan and junction three for St Helens. at around 12.53pm yesterday . A stretch of the motorway was fully closed off as emergency services responded.
Lancashire Police said the crash involved four vehicles - two articulated large goods vehicles and two cars. Sadly, the driver of one of the cars died on the scene.Formal identification has not yet taken place but he is believed to be a man aged in his 40s, the force added. A stretch of the motorway was closed off for the afternoon and evening after the crash as investigations were carried out.
The westbound carriageway was fully reopened at around 5am this morning once resurfacing work had taken place. Officers are now urging any witnesses, or anyone with footage, to come forward. Sergeant Matt Davidson, lead investigation officer with Lancashire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "First and foremost, my thoughts are with the driver’s family and loved ones at this distressing time. This was a difficult and challenging scene for the emergency services who attended.
"The carriageway was closed for a substantial time while we investigated the collision and repairs were made to the road. I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from either side of the motorway between 12:40pm and 1pm to please contact police on 101, or email SCIU@lancashire.police.uk quoting log 0620 of 17 May 2024."
