Police and bomb disposal engineers descended on Lenton on Friday, June 28, after two suspicious objects were found on Allington Avenue and on nearby Maxwell Court

A man has been detained by police in connection with the discovery of two suspicious packages - one of which has been blown up by army experts. .

Many people were evacuated from their homes by police officers on Friday afternoon, with some having to stay overnight in the nearby Walton Hotel. However, after the package found in Maxwell Court was destroyed by a controlled explosion, the cordon has been reduced and many stranded people have been able to go home.

Nottinghamshire Police said the package did not actually pose any risk to the public. A second controlled explosion is planned regarding the other package, but cordons remain in place until it can be made safe.As part of their investigation, police have since detained a man under the Mental Health Act. Superintendent Jon Foy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We’d like to thank all those who took in friends and neighbours who were displaced.

"We’d also like to thank residents for their patience and understanding during what has been a complex and challenging incident. “Specialist search teams remain in the area as work continues to make the remaining package safe.” Affected people, many of whom are students, have been provided with temporary accommodation by the city’s universities.
