The roundabout where Maid Marian Way meets Derby Road and Upper Parliament Street is being replaced

Work to transform an "outdated" roundabout on Maid Marian Way will begin this month to make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians. The roundabout where Derby Road and Upper Parliament Street meet Maid Marian Way will be replaced by a T-junction.

Despite the issuing of an effective bankruptcy notice late last year, the Maid Marian Way project is able to go ahead given it is funded through Government grants secured by the city council. Initial preparation work will therefore begin from Monday, February 12 for up to two weeks, with vegetation and eleven trees being removed. An off-peak road closure, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, will be in place on weekdays during the roundabout.

The main construction works will begin in April and the new junction is expected to be complete by spring 2025. It follows a public consultation carried out in 2022 where more than half of pedestrians responding said the current roundabout was 'poor' or 'very poor' for pedestrians to use.
