RELIEF CHECKS: The Maine Legislature approved relief checks for residents struggling with high winter heating costs as part of an assistance package approved Wednesday.

The Maine Legislature approved relief checks for residents struggling with high winter heating costs as part of an assistance package approved Wednesday.

It also includes $10 million for emergency fuel assistance and $21 million to bolster an emergency relief housing fund to help people experiencing homelessness.. All payments are expected to be mailed by the end of March.Sign up for NECN newsletters. If you filed as an individual and made less than $100,000 that year, filed as a head of a household and made less than $150,000, or filed as a married couple and made less than $200,000, you qualify for these payments.

Republicans praised the public hearing, but some of them continued to express opposition on Wednesday, questioning the cost of the package and whether some money could have gone to other priorities.
