Tom was sworn in on his 22nd birthday, and has now been a magistrate for over 14 years

A Nottingham magistrate who started volunteering in the role at just 22 years old, has shared the importance of volunteering and being able to give back to the community. Tom Quarton-Manuel works as a commercial and business development lead, but he has also volunteered as a magistrate for more than 14 years and hopes to encourage others to do the same.

He continued: "No two days are the same, we have got many different types of cases that we deal with, from driving offences to criminal damage and assaults, all criminal cases will start in the Magistrates' Court and most of them will end there too. I think all of them leave some sort of imprint on me, I can remember the first person I sent to prison and what that felt like and how important that was and how serious it was.

The Judiciary of England and Wales and the Ministry of Justice are now calling on people from all walks of life in Nottinghamshire to consider volunteering as a magistrate, and giving back to their local community and helping the magistracy better reflect the diversity of British society.
