To save Brazil’s Amazon, Lula must win power in October or Bolsonaro’s ‘death package’ will finish it off

To the delight of his supporters, Lula, the leftwing populist who was jailed for corruption but freed after judges ruled he hadn’t had a fair trial, is currently ahead in the polls. According to a new report by the Inevitable Policy Response, a climate transition forecasting consortium, a Lula victory could, crucially, see net deforestation end by 2030, or even before.

Among the proposals are plans to relax environmental licensing rules – and in some cases grant licence exemptions.
