Morecambe's glory years revisited

Eden Project North will be built on the site of Morecambe's Super Swimming Stadium. In the 1930s, Britain saw a boom in open air swimming pools and plans for the Super Swimming Stadium were approved.

Jennifer Gurley, 22 from Sale, Cheshire, newly crowned Miss Great Britain, pictured in Morecambe's Super Swimming Stadium, August 30, 1967 It was demolished a year later with part of the structure being used as a Dolphinarium before the whole site was eventually cleared for a leisure park.Opened in 1964, Marineland was an aquarium for dolphins billed as the first in Europe. Dolphins were flown in from Florida alongside sealions, rare tropical fish and even snakes.

In 1991, the last remaining dolphin, Rocky, was released into the sea in the Caribbean. Marineland had closed the previous year and the site was demolished in 1992.With the demolition of Morecambe's Super Swimming Pool, a leisure park and Bubbles appeared in the lost lido's wake. Bubbles opened in 1991 and was loved by bathers for its fully-heated indoor leisure pool with water slide, an outdoor 'Blue Lagoon' and sun-trap terracing.
