This Sunday, Brigid Kosgei is set to take gold at the London Marathon.

“When I broke the world record, in that moment I didn’t know I’d done it. It was only at the finish line I realised what had happened. It was amazing as I wasn’t thinking that I’d ever break that record,” explains Kosgei of her landmark moment in Chicago. “It came as a result of my great preparation… you can just run your own race and prepare to the best of your ability. That’s what I strive to do every time I make it to the start line.

For Kosgei, who trains with her husband, family is everything – especially as the world comes to terms with a new way of living and training. “There was a brief break in training during the pandemic – I managed to spend some quality time with my family, which was great. I even got to run with my kids!”

That said, a global pandemic doesn’t get in the way of Kosgei's focus and mindset. “Once I was back to training, it was business as usual, getting in my miles and just trying to be the best version of myself. I continued to follow my guiding principles of hard work, discipline and perseverance; that’s all I can do and then hope that’s enough for a great performance on race day.”

If the UK’s shorter evenings, plummeting temperatures and seemingly endless precipitation are threatening your lockdown running resolution, Kosgei’s words of advice are simple but effective. “Consistency is key,” the athlete explains. “If you continue to put in the hard work, you will see the rewards. Sometimes you have to be more patient than others, and sometimes you may not feel like running, but in the end it will pay off.
