We’ve written to Liz Truss requesting she issue a correction for false claims made about energy bills in local BBC interviews this morning. 🔍 Our fact check 👉 ✍️ Our letter to the Prime Minister 👇

Through the Energy Price Guarantee, the maximum people will pay for energy will be £2,500.This is false. This figure is based on the amount a “typical” household will pay, based on average energy usage, but it is not a cap on the total cost of bills.

At other points during her round of interviews on BBC local radio stations this morning, Ms Truss said £2,500 would be the maximum “typical” fuel bill, which is more accurate, though potentially still confusing as it doesn’t explicitly mention usage.

You appear not to know what day of the week it is, or what was actually said.

trussliz and Conservatives don't care about the truth. My family is 3 ppl, my energy bill is just shy of 5,000 p/a as of today. What is this average household bollocks. Someone needs to define that for a start. The cap is on the unit price, important info ignored by gov liars.

Hard to argue with this

Disappointed that while writing to her, you didn’t also tackle her statement that fracking would allow the UK to access gas outside of international market prices

The people who thought she meant a bill cap & not a unit price cap, are probably the same people who thought Boris told them to buy a £20 kettle. 🙄

Have you fact checked Paul Brand quoting mortgage rate of 10.5% offered to some woman on QT last night

I don’t mind liz, but if she said that it’s indefensible

CharlotteWyman1 Bet she will not reply.

Could you also ask them to withdraw the rubbish propaganda and first time buyers on 30k being able to a terraced house in London

garygilligan I really don’t think she understands it

Don’t help her understand anything, it’s best she keeps digging her own career grave .

She will have to find someone who can read first...might be a while.

And what if you have your tumble dryer running for an hour or so, the heating on a couple of hours a day, running a washing machine daily? What exactly do you want energy companies 2 do after you've hit that £2500 figure A. Stop providing energy B. Give the excess away for free?

fascinatorfun Good luck with that. She’s of the ‘never complain, never explain’ crowd and basically doesn’t care.

She won’t reply. She’s under the stairs.

Truss replied, 'You can leave that on the floor on your way out.'

Full Fact are full of lefty woke remainers who want to bring down Liz Truss and install a Labour government. I'm very right wing. sophielouisecc

Shes carrying on the tory tradition of lying constantly

Since £2500 is based on median usage, 50% of households will pay more.

I pointed this out yesterday, initially Truss said I parliament NO ONE would pay above £2,500 for years energy next year, yet on radio stations yesterday the phrase 'on average' was suddenly introduced into the conversation,we are being lied to and duped in a big way,Toriesout

If she can lie about this multiple times, then why should anyone believe anything she says? The MSM should put a warning notice against her pronouncements until they are fact checked.

According to their own website, anyone living in a detached or semi-detached home will pay more than £2,500.

Yes, spotted that right away.

Thanks Bill 🤪🤪🤪

Does anybody not know that this is the typical? It should of course be right though but I’d guess the next thirty time she said typical and the thirty times before she did.

PeterStefanovi2 WTF is going on in the UK? Here in France our combined gas/electricity bill is just under 100€ per month (about £88.00). This should reduce with the recent installation of a wood burner. How on earth was ThickLizzy ever allowed to become PM?

transradiouk Is this the definition of pissing in the wind? Or howling in the void? I don't disagree with the actions, and truth should be held to power. But let's face it, they don't care. A precedent has been set where the PM can lie without consequence

After ignoring your request, denying she ever said it, pretending it was a misquote, accusing you of being woke, have cronies & syphophants pile on, & then blame it all on a civil servant, she'll finally act & have Full Fact banned for spreading facts & living in the real world.

Re the ALT text—anyone opening the image wants to read the letter, so quoting the actual text or key parts of it would be better than just saying 'A photo of our letter'!

kercle Thank you

She was very careful to say typical in the interviews. Doesn't mean she didn't intend to deceive, but hard to prove. Typical lying politician.

Thank you for doing this! Very worried for people who will max out usage thinking 2500 is the max cut off :(

Labour - in polls so far ahead Conservative hearts filled with dread A right wing vivisection In the next gen election? Indeed - the Tories look dead.

NoCakeLeft You might also want to consider writing to hmtreasury about their tweet claiming that a 1st-time buyer in London can save £12,700 in new tax & energy savings. I responded with some simple maths, demonstrating that their example is completely unworkable:

JoannieCo

She doesn't understand her own policy. Either that or she's an absolute liar. In either case she is unfit to be PM and has got to go ASAP.

The tories lie because they think their voters are thick enough not to notice

🤷‍♀️

jans_red And the continuity-Johnson government trundles on, running on the same rails made of lies, obfuscation, half-truths, and more often than not, no fekkin truth at all, as before.

Odd you don't fact check BBCNews output faisalislam is the worst culprit lately but I am sure there is a long list Perhaps you don't have the bandwidth ?

What a waste of time you are. I suppose you’ve got nothing to do now the covid narrative you enforced has crumbled? Why don’t you do something useful with your time like go & flip some burgers?

She just said it again on a BBC Tv regional news broadcast

RicHolden please ensure the PM states it correctly and those of us in rural areas supplied by lpg or fuel oil will pay more.years requesting ofgen rules in 12 years nothing

Or maybe now she's said it, it has to be honoured. Isn't that right YourSSE BritishGas SPEnergyNetwork eonenergyuk ofgem OctopusEnergy?

Everyone in receipt of a bill greater the £2,500 should write to 'useluss' Truss demanding that she pay the difference.

good. the media could help by telling us the price guarantee as per kWh or unit of electricity. it's not that hard.

PeterStefanovi2 MartinSLewis has already explained this.

TeresaWeath 👏👏👏👏👏More of this, please!

PeterStefanovi2 Thank you for including alt-text, but it isn’t very useful - do you have a link to the text for those using screen readers?

PeterStefanovi2 Should have done it in crayon so she would understand it better! Lots of colour and pictures too.

You think she'd know her own bloody policy!!

Fact check: On the basis the week is assumed to start on Monday, this one has been no longer than others in duration. In the event the week is deemed to start on Sunday, there may be the occasional variance, but there is no statistical evidence to link it to factual errors.

PeterStefanovi2 Keep grinding the Bastards down.

Good luck with that 👍

PeterStefanovi2 Tbh, journalists haven't helped; took me weeks to realise references to 'price caps' actually referred to limits on unit prices... complex & nasty enough anyway, without confusing reporting

Best of luck with that, Liz Truss hasn't held her hands up to the other catalogue of errors and miscommunicated messages so far in her 3 weeks and she went hiding for 6 days... Gald that you and MartinSLewis are making sure people aware. I think Delboy is her financial advisor

PeterStefanovi2 I see that trussliz is keeping up the culture of lying at every opportunity entrusted to her by her predecessor.

PeterStefanovi2 U r assuming she can read? 🤔

'almost ... 38% wrongly believe ... cannot go above £2,500'. That such a large proportion of the population can be so ill-informed is extremely concerning. Truss is hopeless, but maybe we do get the politicians we deserve.

She'll just ignore it..

And on a CNN interview earlier in the week.

gandoflam In her interviews this morning, she was having some real difficulties in remembering Jacob's scripts and it was unfair of presenters to ask her any questions, at all, so close to a party conference. 🤦🤦 She sounded absolutely pathetic. Why on Earth is she Prime Minister?

FFS sensible people know what was meant. Did you write a letter for all those banging on about £4k & £6k bills before the cap freeze

mrjoelclark Lie number ? In how many days?

Jim_Cornelius Too right. I thought the same and therefore the energy usage would be off the scale this winter. But she’s quite fond of putting money in the pockets of the energy companies so who knows 🤷🏼‍♂️

paulasherriff robertlargan apologise now, to newsinglossop buxton_news and all your constituents

So you want her to correct the big houses ( cash rich ones) will pay more but don’t want her to point out smaller ones ( majority) will pay less . Crazy logic guys

Don't hold your breath...

If she doesn’t correct her false statement then I might send the amount of my bill over £2.5k to her for payment. Know it won’t work but would feel great! 😂

Bore off.

Can’t even get the date right how can people trust your fact checking, hilarious

OborneTweets Mine is fixed until April, we pay over £2500 already on the old rates, with the new capped rates our bill will more than double, so we will still be paying more than £2500, if I can understand how energy bills work, why can’t the PM?

Fact check: Today is Thursday, not Wednesday. Well spotted, everyone. It's been a long week.

Your letter is dated Wednesday 29 September 2022?

She said the same on CNN
