Karen Foster faces a lengthy prison sentence after admitting killing the nine-month-old in her care

Killer childminder Karen Foster will face sentence this morning over the death of nine-month-old baby Harlow Collinge.

High Court Judge Mr Justice Cotter will pass sentence at Preston Crown Court today . Foster has been warned she faces a lengthy prison sentence.Michelle Colbourne KC will now address the court on behalf of Foster. She says the grief and pain is palpable and nothing she says is intented to take away from that.

The defence say there is nothing in the defence statement that blames the parents and say that is not a serious aggravating feature. Cross examining parents was not something we had in mind. The offences are aggravated by the breach of trust placed in Foster as a childminder, and Harlow's vulnerability due to his age.

The things I noticed were little, for example Harlow's vest wasn't fastened which I thought was lazy. This monster deserves nothing. She has committed the worst crime in the world. She had every opportunity over the last two years but it is too late. He would giggle and play, and had an almighty grip. He would skid across the kitchen in his baby walker crashing into cupboards to stop. i didn't care, it made me laugh.

She added: "He was loved so much. I miss him terribly. Although I am only 16 I have had to grow up quickly."Karen Foster had a choice. She was an adult with responsibility to care and look after precious little people. She was a bully and a coward for not telling the truth from the start. I struggle to understand what happened. She did not just take Harlow's life.

She repeated her account he had been in his high chair and hadn't wanted his lunch. He made a choking noise and she picked him up and slapped him on the back. Foster's narrative then changed and she said Harlow had not choked. Foster was quickly mindful of her own predicament. She said he had been eating and had become floppy, drowsy and unwell. She said on the handover, Gemma had said Harlow had been unwell for three days.
