Wigan MP Lisa Nandy has welcomed news that a hotel in the borough will no longer house asylum seekers. Ms Nandy, who is also Shadow International Development Secretary, said tonight (Wednesday, October 25) that the Home Office had confirmed that 'the asylum hotel' in her constituency was to be closed.

From day one Wigan Council, the police and I have been clear that the hotels in use are unsuitable for vulnerable asylum seekers, with no support provided, and in a village where local infrastructure is already under significant strain.
Locals said they believed it was unsuitable for asylum seekers due to the location having a lack of local amenities, limited public transport, and being on a national speed limit road without a pavement on the doorstep.
