An experiment carried out at 01:30 every morning for 10 nights has revealed the main sources of artificial light polluting the night sky."We used a satellite to measure what fraction of the total light emissions are due to the streetlights," explained physicist Dr Christopher Kyba."And late at night, when people are sleeping - that is exactly when we can save a lot of energy," Dr Kyba, who is based at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, told BBC News.
His light-from-space experiment, published in the journal Lighting Research & Technology, showed that most of the artificial light wasted - by being sent upwards into space, rather illuminating its targeted sign, street or building on Earth - does not actually come from streetlights, but from other sources.
Advertisements, floodlights, lit buildings, facade lighting, parking lots and sports stadia - these are the types of installations responsible for most light emissions, Dr Kyba explained.image copyright"This does make it more difficult to solve, because there are so many contributors. It means everyone has to get together to decide what lights need to be lit at night, and how brightly.
the International Dark Sky Association estimates that 35% of artificial light is wasted by being poorly aimed or unshieldedThat familiar urban glow means that most people on Earth never see a naturally dark night sky, but it also affects migrating birds, insects and other animals, by disrupting the light-dark cycle they are tuned into.
Go back to candles
We can not see in the dark u know what switch it off let's go back to 🕯️
The entire experiment is the waste in this story...
Our towns are so awash with fake light that even at the stillest times clouds are lit from below. Good job British taxpayers and businesses can afford this waste! People saying traffic needs so much light puzzle me. Just a tip: When buying a car have it fitted with headlights.
I think someone is telling porky pies, since when it the Earth in total darkness at the same time 🤷🏻♂️
I’m all for acting on climate change etc... but how does this equate to “wasted energy?” - seems a pretty big call......! 🤔
It is spillover from light mounted here. It has been greatly reduced compared to earlier time period. Design of light fixture has improved. However it can never be zero. Some light will always be reflected.
Not wasted if ya need to see where ya going..
Of course in the Southern Hemisphere it would be daytime.
SzandraTomx I have always wondered why big office blocks in London always have lights on even when empty 🤷🏻♂️
Like the office blocks in london. All lights on for 1 person on a floor. Such a waste....
Would be nice to see the night sky properly - though also nice to have modern technology....
notsam Sam Roberts is a MAN 🙅🏻♂️
Damn that's a lot of pumpkins! 🎃🎃🎃
The people saying about how can this be wasted energy really need to read the article first.
Afrika:🗿
Must be the 'newsrooms' like that are lit up like Christmas trees even when there's nobody in them.
Nyc is full of it
It’s not wasted. It’s stopping families in cars careering into each other and people dying.
Why is it wasted energy If it’s lighting streets it’s about safety and visibility so it’s not waste.
Right, who left the lights on Do you think this is Blackpool illuminations!!!!!
