The 'layer upon layer of lies' allegedly told by one of the accusers at Benjamin Mendy's trial proves that people can lie about being raped, a jury was told.
Delivering her closing speech to jurors, Mr Matturie's barrister Lisa Wilding KC referred to the case of Woman Seven. The woman alleged that she had been raped by Mr Mendy, 28, and Mr Matturie, 41, but the charges relating to her were dropped after a video of her and Mr Matturie engaging in 'consensual, enthusiastic and willing sex' emerged.
She claimed there is a 'spider's web of connections' between the complainants in the case, and said there are 'similarities' in the accounts which some of them have made. She claims that Mr Matturie raped her in a car in August last year, after they had driven to a shop to buy some more alcohol during a party at Mr Mendy's house. The jury heard that Woman Eleven claimed to have been asleep for much of the drive and couldn't remember details.
Ms Wilding said Mr Matturie had been 'proven to be correct' after he told police where they had driven to that evening.Jurors heard that Woman Eleven didn't tell police that she had consensual sexual activity with three other men including Mr Mendy and fellow City player Jack Grealish on the night she was allegedly raped."This I suggest is another prime example of a witness actively and deliberately setting out to mislead the police and then you," she told jurors.
