Lidl to remove cartoon characters from own-brand cereals to help parents buy healthy products

Lidl has said it will remove cartoon characters from its own-brand cereals to help parents buy healthy products.

It hopes that the rebranded packaging, to be introduced in the spring, will alleviate the pressure of children's"pester power".A group of MPs has previously recommended a ban on cartoons on unhealthy foods. Lidl said it will rebrand eight of its own-brand Crownfield products in total, including Choco Shells, which features two cartoon penguins on the box, and Rice Snaps, which is advertised with a grinning cartoon crocodile.

Good, about time.

Surely just removing the food altogether would help? This suggests they don’t want people buying it anyway.

Absolute nonsense!

Like that makes any difference! If people wanted to buy healthier foods they would. The choices are there, it’s just down to attitude, not cartoon characters!

At least Diabetes Dan™ is an honest cereal mascot.

What would really help is to lower prices of 'healthier' products and increase the price of the 'unhealthy' products

Or, just tell your child no

Parents can surely just say no. It's real easy.

ugh stupid move

So my take from this is, remove Tony the tiger from the frosted flakes box but leave the sugar because it's healthier that way.

It was a lot more comfortable when I was on the outside.

Seriously, is there any person in the world who ever expected that food with cartoon characters is healthy?! I thought cartoons are always a sign for lots of sugar and calories.

I suppose it's easier than the government investing in education to make sure parents are smart enough to take care of their own kids.

Ditch the sugar and salt !

Or they was threatened with law suit for copy right

It’s a lion FFS they don’t eat flakes!

Coming from a generation that was brought up on sugary food and drinks complete with free plastic toy bribes, why are we not all obese?.... because we were active as kids not just sitting playing xbox or PS!

In Chile 🇨🇱 it has been forbidden to use cartoons to promote unhealthy food for a long time (July, 2016). It is also forbidden to include toys so we don’t have products like Kinder surprise, McDonalds happy meal. We also have these symbols High in sodium, sugar, calories, fat

Crazy

This is fantastic ! This should be law advertising aimed at children is criminal 10DowningStreet should ban it

Cereal killers

Just think about how many lions this one simple action will save.

Still look appetising lol

I dunno about you, but the first thing I do with a bowl of Cornflakes is put a load of sugar on it because it tastes rank otherwise.

No! I love Lony The Lion! Theyyyyyyy're nice!

Perhaps parents could try saying 'No' to their fat little darlings?

Cereal killers

How about reducing the criminally high level of sugar in these instead?

I'm gonna sound so much older than I am here but what happened to parents just saying 'no' when their kids nag them for something unhealthy?

If you think this approach will work it would be better idea to improve the cartoon characters, branding and image of the healthier products. It certainly wouldn't harm.

Oh yes good idea that will definitely help with my decision making of cereals 🤨

Simple choice is not to buy kids sugary crap foods, scrambled or soft boiled eggs are better than cereals.

Why don’t they just rename them SNOW FLAKES instead of frosty flakes? Because that’s exactly what these idiots are and I won’t be shopping there any time soon.. LidlGB

It’s about time parents just grew up and stopped being enticed by cartoon characters.

It's still better than what the discounters doing here in Germany. They selling their homes brands with 30% less sugar. AND IT TASTES LIKE SHIT.!

Don’t sell ‘unhealthy’ products if you’re that bothered

Does that mean companies will also remove meerkats and dogs from car insurance and penguins from british gas adverts 🙄

Parents still by the cornflakes with sugar on because they like them , not because the cartoon lion has gone

Parents can’t read the sugar content on the side of the box for themselves? Wait sorry, let me rephrase, Parents are too LAZY to the read the sugar content on the side of the box. Nanny State 2020!

BBCScotlandNews Because parents are so STUPID they can’t make a healthy decision for their children, on there own? DUH!!!

Every little helps. 😏

Wake up, kids don't choose cereal because it has a cartoon character on the box and if they did a half assed lion on a packet of Lidl own brand wouldn't come in the top twenty.

Why don't they just package everything in white, save a fortune in printing costs too!

The most stupidist idea ever

Basically stupid parents strike again. If you cannot responsibly choose food for your child, then you shouldn't have a child.

Apart from which that Lion (even though it isn't Tony the Tiger) looks like a distinct case of 'passing off' to me.

Alternatively, parents should stop shirking their responsibility and blaming 'pester power' when they want an easier life.

You're not supposed to eat the box

BBCScotlandNews Fuck Jamie Oliver

There’d be better ditching cauliflowers in plastic bags and bakery bags with cellophane in them

Next try will taking the names off the boxes and packages....it be a lucky dip of what you buy

Does that change the ingredients?

Stop making them with sugar on top then put more cartoon characters on the box

Detracting from the responsibility that parents have to make such choices already

Because parents cant read now

why don't they just stop making cereal with sugar on

Who still buys breakfast cereals?

Lidl over the top

Pandering to the Jamie Oliver types again I see.

a start, not selling them would be better? If not aligned with your values?
