Some spots to check out when everyone is flocking to Helen's Bay or Downhill Strand

While Northern Ireland may be grey most of the year-round, there are those moments when the sun breaks through to give us some 'wonder days'. It is no surprise that when we do, many families pack up the bucket and spades, make up a picnic and head to many of our beautiful beaches.

Carnlough Beach, Co Antrim Carnlough is just 23km away from Larne and 2km beyond Glenarm on the Antrim Coast, making it a perfect stop for a beach trip if you’re travelling from Belfast. The bay itself is 1.5km wide and nearby to all the shops and places to eat the village has to offer. It’s popular for swimming and has stunning views showing five headlands all the way up the Antrim Coast. A sizeable car park is across the street from the beach, where public toilets are also located. If you’re in the mood for an ice cream after your trip, well known ice cream shop The Rhinka is just a few miles away.

Tyrella Beach, Downpatrick, Co Down The Tyrella Beach and conservation area is a small, enclosed complex within Dundrum Bay. It’s a wide, flat, sandy beach two kilometres long and backed by 25 hectares of dunes in a conservation area offering scenic walks. It’s an ideal spot for tourists and locals alike, with the clean waters attracting water sport enthusiasts and the beach provides a safe haven for families and groups who want to enjoy a beach day and picnic.

Around the harbour and sandy beach, there are plenty of picnic and play areas, as well as a host of pubs and restaurants within walking distance.
