Leicester's first black lord mayor to take on role

Leicester's first black lord mayor is due to be officially appointed during a ceremony later.

Talking about becoming the first black person to hold the position, he said: "It feels kind of strange." He said his appointment may make people realise "there are possibilities beyond what they first thought was possible".

His skin colour is irrelevant, a typical example of trying to create division here. Councillor George Cole is to be elected as Leicester's new Lord Mayor would be much more appropriate. The Lord Mayor's role is mainly ceremonial, I wish Mr Cole well for his time in office.

The very fact that a big deal is being made of this says how far we have still got to go before we are truly colourblind. I couldn’t care if a mayor is green, only that they serve well and with integrity, and provide good value for the taxpayers’ money that pays their wages.
