The work in City Square is part of a plan for Leeds to be a city where cars are unnecessary.

Works to transform part of Leeds city centre into a more "people-first environment" are due to start on Monday.

All through-traffic will be diverted away from City Square ahead of its permanent closure to traffic in February 2023.The council said people should also consider alternative ways to travel. The works, alongside other schemes, are part of a package aimed at reducing the amount of traffic in the city centre, and encouraging people to walk or cycle more.

Councillor Helen Hayden, executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: "Removing through-traffic from City Square has been a long-held ambition., which has set out a vision for Leeds to be a city where you don't need a car".

A number of "significant diversions" would be in place, the authority said, adding the route would no longer be "attractive to motorists".where doctors can prescribe walking and cycling to boost mental and physical health. Walking and cycling minister Trudy Harrison said the measures would "ease the burden on our NHS" as well as "improving air quality and reducing congestion".

So not just London where congestion is deliberately created then?

This adversely affects anyone trying to travel between rail station & north Leeds. Bus stop other side of town. Drop off / pick up will require people to drive right around to come in from the south? Or am I missing sthing. Not good for elderly/ disabilities/ luggage.

Just close the city altogether and when it dies on it's a**e we know who is to blame.

How do they get deliveries then? I assume trucks will be banned too. Will they airlift the supplies to the shops and businesses?

Parking enforcement companies will love anyone taking to long at the station or in that area even when construction work near by slows traffic to standstill

What about collecting your ageing parents from the station, who do these works favour
