The risk in Latin America is not just that democracies devolve into dictatorships, but that the region drifts away from the orbit of the West, towards China

). This downward spiral is accelerated by the malign influence of social media and the import of identity politics from the north. Technocrats are discredited and jobs in government are increasingly seen, on both the left and the right, as perks to be doled out rather than crucial responsibilities to be reserved for capable administrators. Organised crime, already a big factor in the region’s epidemic of violence, is starting to taint its politics, too.

Many of these are ills of the democratic world in general, but they are particularly acute and dangerous in Latin America. Most Latin Americans still want democracy, albeit a better version than they have. But there is a growing audience for those advocating the supposedly effective hand of autocracy. Venezuela and Nicaragua have become left-wing dictatorships like Cuba. In El Salvador, Nayib Bukele has centralised power and locked up some 40,000 people in a draconian war on gangs.

. In much of the region, China is now the main trade partner and is investing in infrastructure. Some of the region’s left-wing governments seem keen to return to the non-alignment of the cold-war era. Five of the region’s presidents, including Mr López Obrador, chose to boycott this month’s Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles. The United States—and Europe—could do more to engage Latin America, through trade, investment and technology.

Lol

This is why a U.S. foreign policy is important. We had little under Pres. Obama, even less under Biden.

Latin America has been manipulated and bullied by the US, the same way Eastern Europe and Central Asia have been by Russia.

Theory of multipolarity is successfully defeating American liberal imperialism -- in contrast to the failed attempts of communists. LA needs better elites than the heavily liberal ones who love consuming American products and culture.

This article is good. I’m impressed that leftists always come to “the economists posts” to spread their ignorance. If leftists don’t like this post is because this post must be good. Leftists, you suck!!

This article is amazing. The leftist comments suck as always. Leftist live in a parallel world and believe their own lies. I’m impressed that communists always come to “the economists posts” to spread their ignorance.

Guess why…

远处的和尚好念经,隔壁的和尚琐事多。😄

The ignorance this article exudes is staggering. Who wrote this?

Bolsonaro in Brazil re same Trump for US.

Yes, but even the US democracy is on risk to devolve to a dictatorship (if Trump is elected).

JorgeARestrepo Ya en el Metro de Bogotá, en los sanadresitos, en los almacenes Mario Hernández y iShop, y en las calles con los vendedores ambulantes, están metidos de cabeza los chinos…

Good luck

Did the west really want democratic Latin America? Is there a single example of this kind in the universe? The West, mainly US is responsible from the dictatorships in Latin America! So now they will try China as it is the case in many other regions and countries!

Twisted ..

Both are risks! It's not only democracy, but also market!

US and EU refused waiving patents on COVID vaccines. It's easy to understand that these countries don't want good for rest of the world.

What a farce, the USians have brutalized Latin America forever, installing right wing dictators who have killed and plundered for US corporations. Alignment with China and disconnecting from the US is nothing but upside.

Western orbit has brought death, violence and misery to South America.

Another Indochina tribal means making more white babies?
