MPs have been responding to the prime minister's surprise election announcement, with revised constituency boundaries now in place in the eight seats across North and South Lanarkshire

Voters across Lanarkshire are getting set to go to the polls this summer after prime minister Rishi Sunak’s surprise announcement of a July 4 general election .

“I think Rishi Sunak decided to call the election now because interest rates and the cost-of-living crisis are still hitting hard-pressed families and under the Tories there is no prospect of things improving later in the year. SNP colleague Steven Bonnar will be contesting his revised Coatbridge & Bellshill constituency for a second time, with Chryston now moving into the Cumbernauld & Kirkintilloch seat; and said his five years as the MP for his hometown “has been the privilege of my life”.

Lanarkshire’s newest MP is current Rutherglen & Hamilton East representative Michael Shanks, who won the seat for Labour in last October’s by-election and is now preparing to return to the campaign trail. “An MP’s job is round the clock and requires frequent travel away from home; my decision to stand down at the election reflects the fact I cannot continue to give my full focus to my work while raising a young family.”
