A Lanarkshire girl is dreaming of meeting her favourite princesses at Disneyland Paris after her rare cancer relapsed.
The news was broken to the stunned family on November 8, 2021 that the wee girl was battling stage three Ependymoma, which is a growth of cells that forms in the brain or spinal cord. "She kept getting better and better. Layla was out of hospital in two weeks and we thought it was all over. Unfortunately this treatment isn't available in Scotland and the family were forced to travel to Germany or Manchester. Luckily a spot came up down south in January of 2022."She had 33 rounds of proton radiotherapy and rang her bell on February 18.
"We did loads of different tests but they came back as negative for cancer which we couldn't understand. She had a spinal surgery to cut away part of the largest tumour for testing. "We didn't have an option. This time we were back to normal and thinking that the horrible nightmare was behind us."We knew what we were in for. It all happened a lot slower than previously.
"I've spent sleepless nights researching trials, different research hospitals in America, anything I can do to avoid radiotherapy because of the side effects. "She can do all the observations, take her temperature, blood pressure, does the oxygen, she knows the drill. Some other kids would fight but she sees it as a big adventure. As well as coping with having their daughter constantly in and out of hospital.
Now as Layla prepares to go through major radiotherapy treatment, and her family being told that her chances of relapse for a third time are very high, both Ashley and Darren hope to make their child's dream come true.
