Labour says it would sack NHS managers trying to cover up maternity failings as investigations continue into the deaths and injuries of babies in Nottingham. Wes Streeting said those who tried to silence whistleblowers would not work in the NHS anymore if Labour is elected in the July 4 general election.
Asked what that would mean in practice, Mr Streeting told Nottinghamshire Live: "We do have serious understaffing of maternity units, that's why it's so important that we train up thousands more midwives. But we do also need to learn the lessons in culture."We can't have whistleblowers silenced and I'm very clear - if whistleblowers are silenced by leaders in the NHS, those managers will be sacked and won't work in the NHS anymore.
Concerns around the treatment of whistleblowers have been raised by people including Jack and Sarah Hawkins, whose baby Harriet died in 2016. The parents asked the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust to take action and Mr Hawkins says the trust refused.
