Keir Starmer argues that voters want Brexit resolved. But supporting this deal won’t make his party’s sore spot go away, says Sienna Rodgers, editor of LabourList

confirms, while the British public don’t think much of the Brexit deal, a strong majority also want MPs to vote for it. Since taking over in the spring, Starmer has consistently argued that voters broadly feel politicians should get on with Brexit and move on.

I blame the day it was acceptable for labour to b rebranded has NEW Labour . You don't hear the old fart brigade rebranding bs they just get on with it as always which is loved by 6% an y not magi was a sly mofo she made 94% believe they cud get into 6% grocers girl 4sure

Self-righteous whining and bickering on the Left will only keep the tories in power - you fancy that for another decade? Time to focus on the bigger picture and accept how low the Labour Party had fallen at at the point Starmer took it in hand

Their duplicitous attempts to cancel Brexit will be remembered by far more.

Your best bet to get rid of this government (which I presume is actually your agenda) is to just shut up about this now.

If Labour hadn’t been so set on fighting the democratic vote to leave for the past 4.5 years, they would be in a much better position right now. They need to actually go out and talk to their constituents (all of them) instead of thinking social media is the voice of the people

So, what'll happen? Another huge majority for the tories? Because that's working out so well?

Labours vote for what most of the public think MPs should do will be forgotten by actual voters.

It will be ancient history by the next general election, and was what people wanted Labour to do anyway. But apart from that, spot on.

I bet it will. Voters forget most things.

Johnson would slimply ask 'What is your plan then? Dither and delay.' Pointless rearranging seats on the titanic - there are more important things than brexit. When scotland starts to leave all this whining will be put in perspective.

Is that a kind of droning noise I hear, like a stuck record, like a Guardian editorial team incapable of facing reality, that the voters will not be dictated to by arrogant Londoners.

Labour new leadership will not be forgiven. I will never vote for Labour or Facist Conservatives. I vote for the Green Party even if my vote doesn’t make any difference

That’s a distraction. The tories own brexit. They instigated it and drove it, with many happy to pursue a no-deal outcome, and they alone should be held responsible for its consequences.

Labour were in a tough spot. They had no idea how many nutters in the tory party would be happy with no deal so had to prevent it

It wouldn't have been so bad if he'd said: we're voting for the deal purely to avoid a no-deal brexit, but its a terrible deal and we will fight for a better one when we're in power. But he sounds like a hard Brexit true believer now, telling us all to get over it. Shameful.

I passionately still want to be part of EU but I disagree! Tories now trying to paint Lab as party of Rejoin but Lab now needs to fight next election not last one! We need to draw line & develop alternative, more competent program for Govt! This country badly needs it!

Don't expect some of Guardian contributors to see the logic of Starmer's position. They are blinded by their hatred of all things Tory. So voting for anything put forward by Johnson is a heinous sin in their book.

Brexit was waved through by the previous leadership. This was damage limitation, and the right call. It’s a disaster for the country but no deal would be worse. Time to look forward and build a better future with Labour. Get behind the leader....

I think this is a poor article that fails to justify its own conclusions. For the vast majority of people this deal is a huge relief and vastly better than the only (current) available alternative. Voting against it would have been an act of party political chicanery.

It really will.

We will also not forget Labour did not question SAGE and engage with the alternative view specifically the PCR tests KeirStarmer ToryIncompetence

Country above party, well done Starmer

I think of they had voted against it, it would have been the death of them. People want to move on

Dismissing the concerns of millions that march to voice their concern and voting against their wishes... that has never backfired for Labour.

And if they had voted against it for no deal in a childish way like some other irreverent has beens still clinging onto childish student politics, the electorate would of forgotten that ?

I already thought that Starmer was a useless Brexiter, before the vote.....

Oh just shut up

That simpleton reason is why they keep losing their minds. They can't look at it from a more objective view. The idiots are making sure the tories stay in power.

All this article is doing is trying to divide the 2 parties further when they need to be coming closer together. Why can't a member of one party agree with on something on the opposite side. Why is it so divided and tribal?

They didn't vote for a 'Tory Brexit', they voted against a disastrous No Deal.

The sooner we get on with Brexit the sooner we find out if it benefits us in the south. If things go bad we just rejoin. The Red Wall will believe whatever it’s told, so don’t worry about them, as if anybody did anyway. Big Brexit party tonight for the 52%, the 48% losers look on

That was the ultimate betrayal of labour principles. And what did they gain by it? Actually they lost badly.

The Guardian went from being the paper of the Left, to the paper of teaching unions, and now currently to the newspaper of lobbyists.

Bad move by labour, they won’t be in government for a good decade or so. Does it even make a difference, labour or Tory government is the same thing right?

I think a no deal and a further 11% erosion of GDP in addition to the COVID annihilation of the economy would have been a damned sight worse.

As Elsa would say, let it go.

You mean Labours’ vote against a massively damaging no deal and its move to being a serious party of government, that puts the country first and not political posturing. There fixed that for you.

...and if they had voted for Theresa Nay’s Brexit deal?

siennamarla maybe realise that most voters want people to vote yes for the deal.

Keir_Starmer why It’s a crap deal ....

just another example of how much of a snake he is

Very funny. Rivals? To what, or whom You can't find any rivals to any party in the GBR. No rivalry because of no difference. Especially in intelligence.

Why not? The voters soon forgot the Tories voted for the Iraq war.

Keir_Starmer made his already difficult job even more so by his stupid behaviour, especially that appalling article in the yesterday. Brexit is only just starting & he will now share the blame for BorisJohnson reckless idiocy.

What a load of bollocks. The Labour Party voted against no deal. Is it really that difficult to understand?

They don't have any rivals other than the Tories worth worrying about.

Not all the time there are people left like you fighting the lost battles of the past... 🙄

Abject nonsense - it did the only sensible and politically literate thing available to it.

Nor will it make any sore spots go away
