Any decision on the future of the troubled water company is likely to be left to the next Government

could be an early headache for a future Labour government after Rishi Sunak’s decision to call a July election.

But a draft decision by Ofwat on the business plan, originally due on 12 June, now looks set to be delayed until after the general election. During his bid for the Labour leadership in 2020, Sir Keir Starmer pledged to bring water companies back into “common ownership”. “However, the combination of public disgust and resentment and anger at the current system, …is huge and growing.A group of Labour MPs, including former shadow chancellor John McDonnell, Kate Osamor and Clive Lewis, has publicly called on the party’s leadership to consider nationalising water companies.

It came as Ofwat said it was “minded” to take action against the company over a £37.5 million dividend payout that was made to shareholders last October despite poor performance.
