The Labour Party just voted against adopting an unambiguous Remain position.

While the leadership seems to want to keep its options open on Brexit, so that it can appeal to both Leave and Remain supporters, most of its supporters are in the Remain camp is one of the most important issues facing this country, according to the latest data from Ipsos MORI.

Despite this, in its conference in Brighton this week, the Labour Party is still debating what its position should be – and indeed,But what is this doing to the party’s support in the polls? First of all, it’s important to recognise that the UK itself remains divided, and it is understandable that Labour wants to appeal to as many voters as possible. No option has support from a large majority – and all have substantial numbers against.

When it comes to leaving the EU with a deal, Labour voters are a bit more finely balanced, with support from four in 10 people. This is a source of much of the dilemma that Labour finds itself in. While the leadership seems to want to keep its options open on Brexit, so that it can appeal to both Leave and Remain supporters, most of its supporters are in the Remain camp.

Labour’s struggles to resolve this predicament can be seen in two related problems – a lack of clarity about its message, and unhappiness with the party’s performance on the issue.
