I'm not sure why so many people are against this. Rail fares are far more affordable in most European countries. Rail travel is a public good that eases congestion on the roads and aids the economy.

Absolutely possible only if the railway is brought in under state ownership and run efficiently. Efficiency is the big question. Technology is there in order for it to be exactly that. TFL runs pretty well! May be that is the model to start with and then improve. Reinvest profit!
