“I think the easiest thing on which there is the most consensus among the public and probably even their lordships is that hereditary principle [there are still 92 hereditary peers] is unsustainable,” she said. As the shadow minister responsible for preparing Labour’s legislative programme Ms Debbonaire clearly wants to avoid another long-running battle with the Lords like those that sapped first Tony Blair and then the coalition government.

Those preparations put Debbonaire, 56, at the heart of some of Labour’s most intense internal battles. A prior career dealing with the consequences of domestic abuse – including working directly with violent men – was good preparation for politics, she said.
