"Whether that means Labour is the largest party or wins a majority, I don't know," the former Labour leader tellsNeil Kinnock has said Labour supporters would like to see more ambitious policies in Keir Starmer’s manifesto and that the party must prepare for its lead in the opinion polls to shrink in the run up to the election.
Commenting on Starmer’s plan should he make it to No10, Kinnock said: “I don’t think anybody thinks they’re ambitious enough. But they are certainly progressive, and they are impressive. He said that the current economic situation facing the UK meant that Starmer had no choice but to ditch pledges such as spending £28bn every year on environmental schemes and scrapping his plan to raise income tax for the top five per cent of earners.
“The second thing is the vital requirement is that you express yourself in a way that shows you understand the feelings and aspirations of the Labour Party. Now that’s one electorate, in Keir’s case, of about half a million. Kinnock said he felt Labour’s current lead of around 20 points in opinion polls would shrink as the election gets closer.
